Life is About Thriving. Keep Your Cardiovascular System Healthy.

Living vigorously and feeling exuberant is your aim; not merely just surviving. Keeping your cardiovascular system healthy helps you stay off life’s sidelines. Your cardiovascular system includes your heart as well as the veins and arteries throughout your body. If just one part of this system isn’t working in your body, chances are the others can suffer as well, leading to heart disease, peripheral vascular disease and other complications.

With proper early medical intervention, some forms of heart disease can be treated with diet, exercise, medication or a combination of treatment. The Heart and Vascular Center provides a full range of cardiology services including education on prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and follow-up care for people with heart and peripheral vascular disease.

  • Trauma Center (Injury Prevention Programs)
Did you know the number of traffic related deaths that occur in the United States each year is equivalent to a daily 737 jet crash? Last year, Hillcrest treated over 600 trauma patients with serious or life-threatening injuries.

Almost 30 Texans die every day from traumatic injuries; almost 10,000 each year. Trauma is the leading cause of death in persons aged 1-44 years. For every trauma victim who dies, at least six are seriously injured.

The facts are staggering, but Central Texas has a system in place to help prevent trauma and treat trauma victims. Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center has been verified by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) as meeting the criteria for a Level II Trauma Center.

The Texas Department of Health has also designated Hillcrest as a Major (Level II) Trauma Facility--one of only nine in the state of Texas. What this means to Central Texans is the level of care provided by the Trauma Team at Hillcrest meets the same standards as other major trauma facilities across the nation.

Hillcrest works together with emergency medical service providers, physicians, specialists and area hospitals to provide a full continuum of trauma resources to Central Texans. Studies have shown that such coordination of the emergency medical resources can result in a significant decrease in trauma deaths and disability.

  • Hospice

    Reclaim the Spirit of Life

What is Hillcrest Community Hospice? Established in 1984, Hillcrest Community Hospice is a community-based, non-profit service of Hillcrest Health System. Hospice is a concept of care rather than a place. Hospice allows patients to receive care in the comfort of their  home surrounded by family and friends. Care can also be provided in the nursing home or hospital setting. Hospice celebrates life and believes that while there may not be hope for cure, there is hope for comfort, compassion and dignity.

    Basic Hospice Concepts

    • Hospice is a concept of care for those living with a terminal illness.
    • The 24-hour caregiver is provided through the family members, friends or private pay personnel.
    • Hospice neither hastens death nor prolongs life. Hospice seeks to have the remaining life to be of good quality.

    Admission Criteria

Patients have a life expectancy of six months or less if the disease follows its normal progression. A physician must certify that the disease is terminal. A primary caregiver, either a family member or a hired caregiver, must be available to the patient 24-hours a day, if a patient is unsafe alone. (If a primary caregiver is not available, Hospice care may be continued in a nursing facility.)

    Who Pays for Hospice?

Hillcrest Community Hospice is firmly committed to providing Hospice care for all individuals regardless of ability to pay. Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance cover Hospice care. Those who contribute to Hospice through donations are investing in the commitment to provide comfort care to the terminally ill in the community. As a non-profit organization, Hillcrest Community Hospice depends on charitable gifts, memorial funds and tribute donation as a valuable resource for patients. The annual fund-raiser is the Holiday Tree Lighting, "Light Up A Life," however, donations can be received throughout the year. If you would like to make a donation, please send the donations to Hillcrest Community Hospice at 3000 Herring Ave, Waco, Texas 76708.

    The Hospice Interdisciplinary Team

One of the things that makes hospice unique is the provision of an interdisciplinary team.  We recognize that people have a variety of needs - physical, emotional, social and spiritual. Our team is dedicated to meeting all the needs of our patients and their families.
